Trade show booth heat maps: how to read your foot traffic.

A heat map turns three days of booth traffic into one picture. Here is what it actually shows, how it is captured without cameras, how to read traffic density against dwell density, and the three findings that change the next show.

01 · What it shows

One picture of where your foot traffic went

A booth heat map is your floor plan, colored by what visitors did on it. Warm colors mark the zones that drew the most people or held them the longest. Cool colors mark the areas people walked past, or never reached at all. It is the single most shared page in a post-show report because nobody needs a legend to understand it.

There are two heat maps, and the difference matters:

  • Traffic density: how many people moved through each area. It shows the paths, the pinch points, and the entrance everyone actually used (rarely the one the designer intended).
  • Dwell density: how long people stayed in each area. It shows where attention happened: the demo that held a crowd, the seating that worked, the product wall that did not.
The entrance is usually the hottest traffic zone and the coldest dwell zone. Reading one map without the other is how a busy doorway gets mistaken for an engaged booth. The two maps together tell you whether a zone attracted people or held them.

Where the foot traffic data comes from

A heat map is only as good as the counting underneath it. Four methods produce one in practice:

03 · How to read one

The three findings worth looking for

The dead zone

Cold on both maps. Space you paid for in carpet, structure, and staffing that nobody used. Usually a corner, often behind a large display. It is next year’s easiest win: shrink it, move the coffee there, or hand the square footage back.

Traffic but no dwell

Warm on the traffic map, cool on the dwell map. Something attracts people, then nothing holds them. The fix is content, not layout: a demo, a seat, a screen worth standing in front of.

Dwell but no capture

Warm on the dwell map, but few badge scans in that zone. People are already lingering where your staff are not. Move the scanning conversation to where the attention is instead of asking attention to come to the desk.

Add a fourth read when you have the data: the hourly heat map. Peak traffic between 11 and 1 on day one becomes the staffing plan for day two.

What heat maps changed on real floors

  • A critical-care exhibitor’s hospitality line ran straight through the booth. The traffic map showed the queue choking every other zone. Rebuilt around open flow, the booth served 71% more guests and year-over-year exhibit impressions rose 86%.
  • A 20x30 satellite booth running a charitable basketball game logged 2,679 games with an average dwell of 1:09. The dwell map proved people stayed to play, which is why the client called it busier than a main stand four times its size.

05 · Planning

Get a heat map you can act on

  1. Name your zones before the show. Demo, theater, hospitality, info desk. The map is only useful if its regions match the decisions you will make.
  2. Include the aisle. Onlookers who watch from outside the footprint are audience you earned. Ask for perimeter coverage.
  3. Ask what is captured about a person. The right answer is nothing identifiable. Put it in the compliance file.
  4. Get it live, not just after. A heat map you can see during the show pays for itself in staffing changes before the show closes.
  5. Measure the same way next year. A heat map compared with last year’s is worth ten measured once.

What is a trade show booth heat map?

A color-coded floor plan of your booth showing where visitors went and how long they stayed. Warm colors mark the zones with the most traffic or the longest dwell; cool colors mark the areas people passed or never reached. How is booth foot traffic captured for a heat map?

Four ways in practice: pressure-sensing mats under the carpet, WiFi or Bluetooth sensing of attendee phones, overhead cameras with people-counting software, or LiDAR sensors that map anonymous movement in 3D. Mats only see the floor they cover, phone sensing is an estimate, and cameras raise privacy questions at many congresses. What is the difference between a traffic heat map and a dwell heat map?

A traffic heat map shows how many people passed through each area. A dwell heat map shows how long they stayed there. The two disagree more often than you would expect: an entrance can be the hottest traffic zone and the coldest dwell zone at the same time. Reading them together is what tells you whether a zone attracted people or held them.

Can a booth heat map be made without cameras?

Yes. Anonymous sensing methods such as LiDAR represent each visitor as an unidentifiable point, so the heat map is built from movement alone. No images, no facial recognition, no device identity, and no attendee opt-in, which is the standard at healthcare and pharmaceutical events.

How do I use a heat map to improve the next show?

Look for three things: the dead zone (space you paid for that nobody used), the traffic-but-no-dwell zone (something attracts people but does not hold them), and the dwell-but-no-capture zone (people linger where staff are not scanning).
